Romancing the Rustic, 2020-21

Recent works such as Rustic Window (Delphi) (2020) depict imaginary mediterranean scenes, with shuttered or boarded up windows alongside generic nods to culture such as urns and musical instruments. These are in part visual manifestations of feelings of confinement and detachment, using closed windows as a metaphor for the concealed, closeted and out of reach. The urns and planters are metaphorical empty vessels, all surface and lacking content. The label rustic is often idealistically applied to evoke the rural, simple and authentic, but also carries a generalising, condescending tone and a tendency to focus on the appearance of things.
