Romancing the Rustic, 2020-21

Recent works such as Rustic Window (Delphi) (2020) depict imagined Greek scenes, with shuttered or boarded up windows alongside generic nods to culture such as urns and musical instruments. These visual manifestations of feelings of confinement and detachment use closed windows as a metaphor for the concealed, closeted and out of reach, the urns and planters are empty vessels, all surface and lacking content. The label rustic is idealistically applied to evoke the rural, simple and authentic, but also carries a generalising, condescending tendency to focus on the very surface of things.
